Reading plans have a well-known failure mode: someone starts one with real intention, misses a day, feels behind, and quietly stops opening the app rather than face the gap.
Edify's reading plans and reminders are built around getting people back into the plan, not punishing them for missing a day. A missed reminder doesn't reset progress or shame a reader with a broken streak that feels impossible to recover — it just prompts them to continue from where they are.
We looked closely at how streak mechanics work in other habit apps before deciding not to copy them directly. A visible streak counter is genuinely motivating for some people and genuinely discouraging for others — the moment it breaks, a subset of users disengage entirely rather than restart at zero, because the streak itself became the goal instead of the underlying habit it was meant to support. For a reading app specifically tied to spiritual growth, that trade-off felt wrong: we didn't want anyone to feel like they'd "failed" at reading their Bible because a counter reset.
Reminders themselves are set by the reader, not assumed by the app, because a plan someone actually chooses the timing for is far more likely to survive a busy week than one imposed on a default schedule that never fit their day to begin with.
We also built a quiet recovery mechanic into the plans themselves: falling behind doesn't lock a reader out of the next day's reading or force them to catch up sequentially before moving forward. They can jump to today, keep the plan moving, and circle back to what they missed whenever they want — or not at all. The plan adapts to the reader's actual life rather than demanding the reader adapt to the plan's original schedule.
A reading plan's real job isn't to look impressive on day one. It's to still be running on day thirty, quietly, without drama, for someone who missed four days in the middle of it — and design decisions across Edify are made with that longer, messier, more realistic timeline in mind rather than the clean version that only exists in a product demo.
