A listening app is, by nature, a solitary experience — earbuds in, one person, one voice. The Readers Circle was our attempt to give that solitary habit a shared moment without turning the app into a social network.
Inside the Readers Circle, listeners can share thoughts, ask questions and discuss verses with others using Edify's Audio Bible & Stories. It's built around Scripture and specific content in the app, not an open feed, which keeps the conversation anchored rather than becoming generic social chatter.
That anchoring was a deliberate reaction to what open social features tend to become. A general discussion feed drifts — a thread about a specific chapter of Scripture slowly turns into off-topic conversation, and eventually the space stops being useful for the thing it was built for. Tying every discussion thread to a specific chapter or story keeps the conversation close to the content, the same way a good small-group Bible study stays anchored to the passage being studied rather than wandering.
We kept the feature deliberately light — no follower counts, no algorithmic feed deciding what gets seen. The Readers Circle exists to add a moment of community to an otherwise private habit, not to compete for attention the way a social app would.
That also meant resisting the usual growth mechanics that make social features addictive — no notification badges pushing someone back in every time a comment gets a reply, no visible metrics turning a genuine reflection into a popularity contest. The Readers Circle is there when someone wants it and invisible the rest of the time, which is a much harder product to build than one designed to maximise time spent, but a much better fit for what it's actually for.
For an app people mostly use alone, even a small, well-scoped space for discussion changes how connected the habit feels — without asking anyone to turn their private listening time into a performance for an audience.
