No monthly fees: rethinking how church software gets priced

Most software businesses run on recurring revenue for good reason — it's predictable. MyChurchApp PRO deliberately doesn't work that way, and that's a pricing decision as much as a technical one.

A monthly fee for something like a church app quietly becomes a recurring budget line that has to be justified every year, competing against ministry spending that feels more urgent. For smaller churches especially, that ongoing cost can be the difference between having a branded app and not having one at all.

We've seen that trade-off play out directly in conversations with smaller churches — a modest monthly figure that sounds trivial to a large congregation can be a genuine budget conversation for a church running on a few dedicated families' giving. Software is rarely the thing a finance committee wants to defend against a request for more outreach funding or building maintenance, even when the software itself is valuable.

MyChurchApp PRO instead prices around deployment — a church requests its app, and payment is tied to getting it built and live, not to a subscription that runs indefinitely afterward. It's a trade-off: less predictable revenue for us, but a cost structure that actually fits how a church budgets.

That trade-off does have a real cost on our side, and we don't pretend otherwise: without recurring revenue funding continuous new feature development for this specific product, ongoing enhancement moves slower than it does for our subscription-funded products. We accept that trade explicitly, because the alternative — pushing every church toward a subscription model regardless of fit — would solve our predictability problem by creating a worse one for exactly the churches this product is meant to serve.

Software pricing isn't just a business model decision — for something like a church app, it's also a statement about who the pricing is really designed for, and we'd rather that statement favour the smaller church weighing every line in its budget than favour our own revenue forecasting.
